The Real CEO Question
2009-08-20 06:28
------ Here, I have a real-life question that tests what kind of boss you are or will be: Facts: You just started your business. Since you are unsure of the economic future, you draw minimum salary monthly, hoping that the income you generate will be sufficient to cover the monthly overhead. You have 4 very dedicated and experienced staff who, from time to time, indicated to you that your competitors are trying to recruit them. Your office is not professionally renovated, as you do not want to spend so much initially.. Your competitors are spending huge sum to market their products, and you feel that you are losing your market share. Your wife is expecting and you will need some cash in a few months time. And, at the end of the year, after deducting all expenses (including rental, staff salary, stationery, utilities etc), your business generates a net profit of RMB100k. Question: what will you do with the RMB100k? This is an essay and not an objective question, so, no (a) (b) (c) (d) for you. Don't be lazy. Please write out your short and clear answer and forward to me or everyone. ------

Base on the limited information given, here are some of my opinions:
First, discuss with your wife and estimate how much do you need in few months time. I guess she is particularly good in this calculation.
Your development plan to the firm will help to decide whether or not to keep those 4 dedicated and experienced staffs. I have heard that "staff is the greatest asset to the company", to have these greatest assets continue to stay, maybe we should find out what are their needs besides the higher salary. There are some ideas came to my mind and I am not sure whether it is practical: Compensation, Sense of belongings, Career path and Profit sharing.
Compensation --------------------- For compensation, we can give them compensations in different way with a budget allowed and yet enjoy the effect that might be more than just giving them the cash. Consider fixed amount of monthly petrol redemption (in coupon / voucher) and company subsidized parking fee etc.
Sense of belongings ----------------------------- Build up their sense of belongings to the firm, this is another way to improve the co-workers’ loyalty and to have better resistance to opportunity from competitors or head hunters. Consider birthday cake / gift / celebration in office (budget mah, haha), have a lunch with them every week / month, buy breakfast / lunch to office for them occasionally and be proactive to know their family members (yeah, you got to have big memory, man! :P) etc.
Career path ----------------- This is especially important to those who are still young. If one does not see their career path in the firm, they will most probably leave after 1 or 2 years if they have a dream. If your firm has no career path planning for staff now, maybe should discuss with your HR manager for it. It has to be transparent, something like what is there in EY and KPMG. For example, after 2 years for performing good or at least not making any serious mistakes, your staff will be promoted to Senior Lawyer I (don’t know if this title make sense, hehe :P), or Principle Personal Assistant and Secretary (Female only) With Full Care (your wife is going to kill me).
Profit sharing ------------------- This might be the ultimate weapon which will build their sense of belongings and to show them their career goal at once. Consider to allocate some percentage of your profit and share with the top performer(s) of the year. Come on, don’t be so kiam siap lah, share share a bit mah. To maximize the effect of profit sharing from the perspective of empolyee’s loyalty, I will distribute the profits / shares in a timely manner. Meaning is to leverage the amount / shares to be awarded into several portions and credit to their account in several months / years. This will prevent them to quit the company right after they have got the award. In other words, this also tell them that “Kalau lu baik baik kerja sama saya, lu akan dapat banyak duit. Lu kerja lagi lama dapat lagi banyak. Kerja sampai 10 tahun, wa belanja lu makan bak kut teh dan lim chiu, wuahahaha!”
Just some opinions lah, don’t know if it is practical, hope this helps.

(M..a..n..a..g..e..r)
